Northwest Demolition & Dismantling was contracted by Goodfellow Bros for the decommissioning of the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory atop the summit of Maunakea. Following the successful relocation of the telescope to Chile, NWDD conducted the removal of all site components including the iconic silver geodesic dome, on-site support buildings, and site hardscaping from the remote project site nearly 13,000 feet above sea level. NWDD mobilized a specialized High Reach Demolition (HRD) excavator to the remote summit location to surgically demolish the dome structure whilst under strict oversight by cultural, archeological, environmental, and construction monitors, as well as the Center for Maunakea Stewardship (CMS). Following removal of the onsite structures, the site was restored to natural conditions and will be monitored to document passive natural repopulation over the next 3 years. This removal effort was completed safely and without incident or impact to the sensitive surrounding environment.
