Northwest Demolition was contracted by Rio Tinto to develop an execution plan and budget for the closure of Diavik Diamond Mine. The purpose of the consultation was to define the optimal demolition methodologies to ensure the safest and most cost-effective solutions to implement. For this effort, NWDD assembled a team of individuals who specialized in decommissioning and site closures such as:

  • Logistics and planning
  • Asset recovery and waste disposition
  • Decontamination and handling of hazardous materials
  • Material volume assessment
  • Equipment operations and methodologies
  • Work execution and technical expertise for demolition operations
  • Cost estimation
  • Risk and safety identification

The mine is located in the remote Lac De Gras region of the Northwest Territory, with access via an ‘ice road’ from Yellowknife February through March. The complete mine closure plan, proposed for 2026, aims to dismantle and remove all infrastructure and equipment from the mine site, including processing plants, accommodation buildings, storage facilities, offices, power generation infrastructure, transportation infrastructure, waste management facilities, and other structures associated with mining operations.
