Northwest Demolition was contracted for the demolition of a massive 500,000-square-foot hotel/resort on the island of Maui. The monolith of a structure required extensive abatement in its 560 rooms. A specialized fleet of equipment, including a high-reach excavator capable of working at a height of over 90 feet, was mobilized to tackle the heavily reinforced concrete structure. The proximity of the site to high value private residences and beach park required special attention to the environmental and public health effects of demolition operations. Work was restricted to specific working hours through a stringent set of noise permits, and a robust set of BMPs were established to manage water runoff and dust suppression.
In total, over 2,000 tons of steel was recycled to minimize the waste and cost impacts of the project. Additionally, Northwest Demolition mobilized a crusher system to crush more than 24,000 tons of demolished concrete for use as onsite backfill.
